In-depth checks apps

Detailed results of the in-depth checks of the reviewed apps

In 2022, a total of around 280 accessibility screens were checked for the 17 in-depth checks of apps. In 2023, there were around 200 screens for 15 in-depth checks of apps and in 2025 around 230 screens were checked for 15 in-depth checks of apps.

Detailed information on the procedure is described under Methodological details.

Shares Compliance status of all in-depth checked apps

Monitoring period

For each app, 120 criteria were checked. The app with the least unfulfilled criteria does not meet 9 criteria. 10 apps (just under 60% of apps) do not meet 10 to 20 criteria. 6 apps (around 35%) do not meet more than 20 criteria. The apps with the most unfulfilled criteria don't meet 35 criteria. This means that all in-depth checked apps are partially compatible with accessibility requirements – they meet at least 50% of the checked criteria, but less than 100%.
If only WCAG is considered and the other criteria from EN 301 549 are not included in the calculation, the proportions are as follows (conformity with WCAG):

  • Fully compatible (100% of WCAG criteria met): 0% (no checked app)
  • Partially compatible (atleast (at least)50% of WCAG criteria met): 94% of apps checked
  • Not compatible (below 50% of WCAG criteria met): A Checked App

For the calculations, valuations with "not applicable" were attributed to valuations with "fulfilled".

Monitoring result by number of WCAG criteria not met

Monitoring period

For the in-depth checks of the apps, 45 WCAG criteria were checked. No app meets all the criteria. The app with the least unfulfilled criteria does not meet 9 criteria. About three-quarters of apps don't meet 11 to 15 criteria. The app with the most unfulfilled criteria does not meet 23 criteria. On average, the apps did not meet 14 criteria.

Monitoring results according to principles

For the in-depth checks of the apps, 45 WCAG criteria were checked. The results are summarized according to the 4 principles of accessibility: "Perceptible", "Operable", "Understandable" and "Robust".

Perceivable

Monitoring period

No errors were found for 4 of the 19 "perceivable" criteria checked: "1.4.2 Audio Control", "1.2.1 Audio-only and Video-only (Prerecorded)", "1.4.13 Content on Hover or Focus" and "1.4.12 Text Spacing". The first two criteria
It was not applicable to any of the apps.

4 criteria were not met by only one app at a time: "1.2.5 Audio Description (Prerecorded)", "1.2.3 Audio Description or Media Alternative (Prerecorded)", "1.2.2 Captions (Prerecorded)" and "1.3.5 Identify Input Purpose".

One criterion was not met by any of the checked apps: "1.3.1 Info and Relationships". Two other criteria were not met by over 90% of the apps: "1.1.1 Non-text Content" and "1.4.3 Contrast (Minimum)".

Operable

Monitoring period

3 of the 15 checked criteria of the "operable" principle were met by all checked apps or were not applicable: "2.5.4 Motion Actuation", "2.3.1 Three Flashes or Below Threshold" and "2.1.4 Character Key Shortcuts".

The two criteria "2.2.1 Timing Adjustable" and "2.1.2 No Keyboard Trap" were not met by only one app at a time.

"2.4.3 Focus Order" is the operable principle criterion that is most often not met – 88% of apps found errors. The criterion "2.4.2 Page Titled" was checked only for documents present in the apps.

Monitoring result additional criteria from EN 301 549

In addition to the WCAG criteria, other criteria from the European standard EN 301 549 must also be reviewed as part of the monitoring. For apps, additional clauses from the following chapters of the standard are relevant:

  • Chapter 5 "Generic requirements"
  • Chapter 6 "ICT with two-way voice communication"
  • Chapter 7 "ICT with video capabilities"
  • Chapter 11 "Software"
  • Chapter 12 "Documentation and support services"

To a large extent, these criteria refer to special cases, such as two-way voice communication, real-time text or authoring tools. Therefore, these criteria are not applicable in many cases.
